Advice

How to get healthy?

Deciding to go on a diet in order to lose weight may be the wrong approach since most diets end up with a net gain of weight. A better approach is to eat the right foods and leading an active life-style. Rather than having a regimented exercise program engage in constant moderate activity. Thirty minutes of even vigorous exercise is not going to make up for hours spent sitting in front of a computer or television set.

There is ample evidence that robust and functioning elderly populations eat the right things (fruits, vegetables and whole grains) and stay away from the wrong things (processed products, soda and fried food). They also actively engage with others – face to face.

Some suggestions:
·      Drink water – it’s hard to distinguish thirst from hunger. And make it plain water. Stay away from the sugars in soda and juices and stay away from the chemicals in diet beverages.
·      Be active. Every day that you eat should include some moderate activity. If you have time to eat you have time to get out of chair to do something.
·      Don’t eat anything out of a vending machine – or anything that could be in a vending machine.
·      Minimize stress since that will affect your outlook on life (and food choices).
·      Spend less time in front of a screen or with devices. Take a break from Facebook or tweeting (or whatever).
·      Have a positive attitude.
